How to Make an Outdoor Movie Screen?

To watch movies outdoors, you need an output projector connected to a DVD player or computer, and an outdoor movie screen.If you don't have a suitable light-colored wall to use, you'll need to set up an outdoor movie screen. A semi-permanent option is to build a large wood or PVC frame and stretch blackout cloth or canvas over it. Blackout cloth, a light-blocking material available at photo supply retailers, is the best choice if you'll be setting up a free-standing screen.

Cut each end of each 7-foot two-by-four at a 45-degree angle using a miter box and hand saw. Repeat with each 5-foot two-by-four. Fit the four pieces together to make a 7-foot by 5-foot rectangle.

Cut each 12-inch by 12-inch piece of plywood in half diagonally so you have four right-angle triangles. Place a triangle in each corner of the 7-foot by 5-foot rectangle so it's flush with the edges. Hammer several nails in each to hold the rectangle together.

Cover the frame with the blackout cloth or canvas. With help from another person, pull the cloth taut and staple it around the sides of the frame. Trim any excess cloth.

Lay the three 8-foot two-by-fours over the back of the screen so two are directly over the 5-foot sides with 3 feet extending past the bottom. Center the third in the same manner. Nail the two-by-fours into the frame so it holds together securely.

Fill each 5-gallon bucket with quick-set concrete. Place the buckets 3 1/2 feet apart. Mix in water as directed. Working quickly, place the screen's three legs into the buckets and hold them in place until the concrete sets.

Move the screen to the desired location. If it wobbles or doesn't stand straight or is affected by wind, anchor it with nylon rope. Nail or staple two 12-foot pieces of rope to each upper corner of the screen. Tie the ends to anchor stakes. Hammer the stakes into the ground to help keep the screen upright.

Project the movie image onto the screen. Move the projector, if necessary, to center the image on the screen in the size desired.
